"To have no home is to have nothing."
Having a home changes your life. As Elisa tells us, "not having a home is having nothing." In this video, Elisa explains the double hardship of living on the streets as a woman. According to the latest data from the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE), in 2022 more than 6,600 women were homeless in Spain, 44.4% of whom were from other countries.
According to the study "Female Homelessness: An Approach to the Intersection of Gender, Age, and Migration Processes" (Matulic et al., 2020), homeless women are doubly invisible , both because they are women and because of their homelessness. Gender inequalities impact them throughout their lives, significantly contributing to limited opportunities that undermine their ability to maintain independent households. Many women, before becoming homeless, suffered violence during their childhood and adolescence at the hands of their parents or siblings, as well as gender-based violence from their partners.
Elisa is one of the people who have been helped within the individual housing programs of Sant Joan de Déu Serveis Socials Barcelona .
