A virtual and cooperative Escape Room to fight cyberbullying
The San Juan de Dios Social Work has launched an awareness campaign aimed at highlighting one of the most prevalent problems among children, young people and adolescents, which affects the educational community and society in general: cyberbullying.
#NOtoCyberbullying is a project involving experts, victims, and professionals to offer resources aimed at the main protagonists: the teenagers who suffer. It also addresses the role of the adults who support them.
The campaign has the collaboration and involvement of illustrator and designer Javi Royo , creator of the decorative vinyl brand Chispum and founder, editor and author of El Estafador , the weekly online graphic humor publication in Spanish with the most readers in the world, and who has created more than 30 cartoons for the occasion.
As the campaign's centerpiece, a cooperative escape room for mobile phones and tablets, "The Silence of the Mirror," has been launched, aimed at first-year secondary school students. This game was developed thanks to the 2020 Orange Solidarity Award in the Responsible Use of Technology category.
With the aim of raising awareness among young people about this commonplace issue, the game takes a relatable and engaging approach. It presents a scenario set in the year 2070, in which students confront the mystery surrounding the disappearance, 50 years earlier, of Ester Arroyo, a first-year secondary school student at their school. Each player will see a different screen and must communicate with their team to report what they see, thus progressing through the game and solving the mystery.
On the project website , teachers will find a link to the game, as well as educational materials to use with students afterward, thus emphasizing the need for everyone to be actively involved in preventing cyberbullying. Jordi Bernabeu Farrús , a psychologist from the Althaia Foundation, collaborated on these materials.
The cartoons and the game aim to spark debate, raise awareness of this issue, and prevent a situation that is often met with silence. Both initiatives will leverage the power of social media to amplify a clear, forceful, yet constructive message: #NOtoCyberbullying.
This campaign coincides with the International Day Against Bullying and Cyberbullying. As explained by Obra Social SJD, "peer abuse, which was previously confined to the classroom or school playground, has now moved into the digital realm, stemming from the misuse of technology. It's a space from which it's virtually impossible to disconnect and which follows the victim everywhere, at any time of day."
