Disconnect from cyberbullying

Challenges and roles of the educational community

Cyberbullying emerged long ago, as long as personal digital devices have been in our lives. The COVID-19 pandemic has given a boost to this type of peer harassment, which thrives on a lack of social empathy. In this digital world, harassment spills over into the public sphere due to the vast reach of messages and images disseminated through the internet, social media, messaging apps, and video game platforms. It's a 24/7 assault, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We reflect on the challenges and the roles of each member of the educational community in the prevention, detection, and response to cyberbullying.

The urgency of changing the social model

New forms of communication and technology, which have brought us so many benefits, have also given rise to new forms of violence. School bullying has found a space in the digital world where anything seems to go: cyberbullying . It is worth considering the origins of this violence and to what extent it is generated and sustained by the social model. What kind of society is available to children and adolescents?

What do you know about cyberbullying?

Estudio ciberbullying
Cyberbullying has increased with the pandemic

The pandemic brought months of lockdown and, consequently, less in-person schooling and more social interaction through mobile devices. A study by the ANAR Foundation reveals that 24% of children and adolescents say they know classmates who may have experienced cyberbullying through WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, or video games.

What to do if cyberbullying is detected?

Although it occurs online, cyberbullying 's primary concern is its impact on group dynamics, the resolution of which is the responsibility of the school. This responsibility also extends to all professionals, services, and facilities that provide support during any phase of the protocol, including those not affiliated with the school but rather part of the local community (community action).

How to tell if it's cyberbullying or not

The word "bullying" is often used among peers or adults, out of context or ironically, jokingly, and leading to an underestimation of what bullying truly is. We, as a whole educational community, need to reflect calmly on bullying and cyberbullying , with the guidance and advice of expert professionals.

Understanding and learning from the role of the bully

I've been asked to write to you as a young person who has experienced bullying. Furthermore, I've been challenged to put myself in your shoes and mind, if it turns out you were the one who bullied. Surely, what you did wasn't just an individual act, and others were involved. But allow me to speak directly to you, and may this also be helpful to those you know.
