Mental health has been linked to art in diverse ways throughout history. Mental health and mental disorders are part of the human experience, just as art and creative potential are. Therefore, it is not surprising that the two intersect in many people and situations.

We all know the name of an artist in various disciplines—painting, literature, music, and so on—who suffered from mental health problems, though we may not know other aspects of their lives: whether they had a happy childhood, whether they experienced adversity such as war or the premature death of their parents, whether their mental health issues appeared before or after their artistic creation… This has often led to the mistaken association of mental health problems with artistic genius. So why do mental health problems seem to be more frequent among artists?

Art can be a tool for expressing the psychological distress and suffering of those experiencing difficult life situations that directly impact their mental health (troubled family relationships, a family history of mental health problems, psychiatric hospitalizations, armed conflicts). But it can also be a therapeutic tool for people with intense psychological distress or a mental health problem. In both cases, the two will be so closely intertwined that it will be difficult to determine which came first: the art or the mental health issue.

On the other hand, art has also always been a means of reflecting one's vision of reality and society, with madness being one of the elements that has been most represented throughout history, with very diverse approaches:

  • Struggle between reason and madness or unreason.
  • The marginalization of mental health problems.
  • Mental health problems manifested as existential anguish or creative anguish.
  • Art that dignifies the marginalized (including people with mental health problems).

Even in the 1940s, an artistic movement emerged among people without formal art training, and it remains very active today. Do you know what this movement is called? Would you like to learn more interesting facts about the relationship between art and mental health?
