To dialogue and transform through artistic expression
Although art is very difficult to define, we all recognize it when we are in its presence. Art is not only about creating beauty, even by imitating nature, but also about expressing emotions, ideas, and inner worlds, exchanging knowledge, engaging in dialogue, and transforming. Art is also a constantly evolving quality that can often be ephemeral.
Art has the power to empower individuals and communities, providing them with identity and a sense of belonging, as well as contributing to their well-being and improved physical and mental health. In this regard, over the last 20 years, there has been a growing interest in understanding the effects of art on health and well-being , and initiatives have been implemented to foster this relationship.
This monograph covers different ways in which art and culture are related to mental health, from the artistic expression of individual and collective distress, access to culture and art by people in vulnerable situations, to ways of using them as tools for improving health, well-being and recovery.
