MásMuseoPicasso emerges as an extension of the Art and Inclusion program that the Picasso Museum Malaga has been developing since 2004, and whose purpose is to promote the effective integration and real accessibility of all people to art and culture, regardless of their characteristics, interests and needs.

On a regular basis, associations, active aging centers, NGOs, day centers, specific classrooms in schools, among others, participate in interactive visits, artistic production workshops, seminars, concerts or other educational and cultural proposals.

In addition, for a little over a decade, long-term projects have been designed, implemented and evaluated with the main objective of developing socio-emotional or cognitive skills in participants through a periodic and prolonged relationship with the visual arts, while also promoting the creation of community.

Inclusive art in mental health: how to make it possible

The analysis of the results obtained in the different projects over these years, beyond the specific objectives set in each of them according to their particularities, corroborates that, during the development of these projects, the participating people acquire skills that promote their empowerment and facilitate processes of social inclusion.

Encouraged by the positive results of their work in this field, and with the firm conviction that art can improve people's quality of life, the teams from the Department of Educational and Cultural Activities and the Department of Art at the Picasso Museum Málaga are conducting ongoing research beyond the museum walls. This research aims to showcase projects and programs that link art and inclusion in Spain, providing a model for those working in this area. All of this has taken shape through the creation of a digital forum: MásMuseoPicasso.

A meeting place for art with social, educational and health aspects

In this commitment to bringing art closer to everyone, MásMuseoPicasso was born, an online platform that aims to be a space for meeting and exchanging ideas and experiences. A reference point for inquiries and research related to social issues, art, education, and health, among others.

It is created with the aim of being an online space, open to the exchange of ideas and initiatives and in the process of growth, with the objective of improving its uses, expanding its resources and adapting to the constant challenges that the digital world poses.

MásMuseoPicasso brings together projects and programs developed by institutions, companies or associations in the world of culture that use art as a tool for social participation.

Along this path, the Museum has found collaboration with the "la Caixa" Foundation, which has contributed to continuing to work on this digital project.

MásMuseoPicasso has become a repository of projects and programs developed in Spain, offering an easy search system divided into three sections:

  • areas of intervention that it works
  • artistic expressions with which it is linked
  • place where it takes place.

Thus, anyone interested in consulting specific information can obtain it conveniently.

In addition, the website contains a large number of interviews with professionals in the cultural field, covering topics such as mental health, migration, and gender.

In this way, a tool is proposed that makes known what is being done and what has been done in a rigorous and interesting way in the field of social inclusion in Spain in recent decades.

Looking back at past projects allows professionals and others interested in the topics covered to learn about projects and programs that can be replicated or serve as inspiration in the social or cultural spheres. In many cases, the projects and programs include links to websites, interviews, or documentary material that facilitates access to specific information.

Constant evaluation, a key aspect of the implementation of inclusive arts programs

Based on the experience of these years, as well as the analysis and research of projects and programs included in MásMuseoPicasso, we can affirm that when proposing an initiative that links art and social inclusion, it is essential to take into account the following factors:

  • To what extent can art influence the causes and effects of situations of social vulnerability?
  • The beneficiaries are an essential part of program design, and it is crucial to listen to their interests and needs.
  • We need to pay close attention to the project's evolution in order to modify it, if necessary.

Furthermore, we consider the evaluation of any project essential to explain and assess the results obtained. This evaluation must be present throughout the entire process, from beginning to end.

  • Diagnostic evaluation: This serves to justify the project, the reasons that originated it, and the needs of the target group.
  • Process evaluation: This is essential to perceive both the progress and the setbacks in the development process.
  • Final evaluation: This is a synthesis of the previous evaluations in which it is concluded whether and to what extent the objectives set have been achieved.

Insisting on the need for rigorous evaluation is what gives us the possibility of designing proposals that can be replicated and improved, firmly committed to making art a tool for social improvement.
