Art, culture and mental health

To dialogue and transform through artistic expression

Art is about creating beauty, expressing emotions, ideas, and inner worlds, exchanging knowledge, engaging in dialogue, and transforming. This monograph explores the various ways in which art and culture relate to mental health, from the artistic expression of individual and collective distress and access to culture and art for vulnerable individuals, to their use as tools for improving health, well-being, and recovery.

Inclusive art in mental health: how to make it possible

The right to culture is a fundamental right enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. All people, regardless of their circumstances, should be able to participate in the cultural life of their community, and for this to happen, art and culture must be respectful of the diverse needs of its members. How can we promote inclusive art for people with mental health challenges?

Comics and recovery in mental health

The almost infinite possibilities of comics to talk to us about illness from perspectives as disparate as fiction, autobiography and clinical narrative have sparked the interest of a new generation of health professionals who believe that graphic narratives can provide both patients and professionals with a better understanding of the pathological phenomenon in all its dimensions.

Teatro
"Through theatre we have been able to work on individual and group emotional aspects"

A group of young people from the Els Til·lers Juvenile Justice Therapeutic Unit share their experience participating in a theater activity that combined theater, comics, and music. This activity aims to destigmatize transgressive behavior in adolescence, foster expressive, imaginative, and creative abilities, acknowledge the emotional journey young people go through, validate the experiences of young people and their environment, and offer a space that promotes peer bonding and group listening.
