What does it mean to you to be healthy? The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Therefore, you cannot be healthy without good mental health . Mental health is important at all stages of life, from childhood to adulthood, and just like physical health, it can change throughout life.

When we talk about emotional well-being (also called mental or psychological well-being) we refer to the state that allows us to feel, think and act fully in our day to day life . Therefore, having good emotional health is much more than not having a mental health disorder. Each person can experience it differently and it can change throughout life.

Emotional well-being allows us to understand, manage and experience emotions in a healthy and balanced way. It also helps us to cope with daily ups and downs and stressful situations, to have satisfying relationships, to work efficiently or to make decisions.

Throughout our lives we face difficult situations that generate stress or mental suffering, such as the death of a family member, the separation of parents, a breakup or having difficulties with studies.

The ingredients to foster your resilience

Having good mental health does not mean always being happy or having only positive experiences. Emotionally healthy people also feel stress, sadness or anger. The first step to having emotional well-being is being able to recognize and express our emotions, whether positive or negative, learning to manage them and also knowing where to seek help when needed.
