Active and healthy aging

Promoting the health, safety, and community participation of older adults

By 2050, 25% of the population will be over 65. We face the challenge of increasingly aging societies with longer life expectancies. Yes, we are living longer, but are we aging with the best possible quality of life? To achieve this, we must guarantee access to active and healthy aging, which, as the World Health Organization points out, is based on developing and maintaining functional capacity and well-being during this stage of life that we will all experience. This involves disease prevention, promoting an active lifestyle, and creating age-friendly environments that foster autonomy, active participation in society, and the ability to manage one's own health.

Promoting healthy aging: a challenge for everyone

To promote healthy aging, strategies and policies must be implemented that improve population health, reduce inequality, guarantee the right to choose, foster aging within the community, and combat ageism. Improving the health of older adults is a human right and brings both social and economic benefits, including the sustainability and development of society.

The importance of urban environments in aging processes

Aging in one's place of residence offers benefits and well-being to older adults, with a significant impact on women in certain urban environments, who find essential support networks within their neighborhoods. A suitable urban environment, with green spaces, no physical barriers, and areas for socialization, is crucial for improving quality of life and mental and physical well-being in old age.

Aging and proximity policies

The increase of Life expectancy and the feminization of aging are shaping the future of public policy. As has been repeatedly stated, demographic change presents opportunities and advantages, but also needs that will become more acute in the future. To address the aging process, the social and care agenda must be expanded, providing resources to the institutions closest to the people.
