Suicide and fiction
What influence have works of fiction had on our perception of suicide throughout history? The talk "Suicide and fiction: between representation and reality", organized by the Social Observatory of the "la Caixa" Foundation and Després del Suïcidi — Associació de Survivents (DSAS) , reflected on how literature, cinema, television series and other media have shaped and continue to shape perceptions of suicide in our society.
Carles Alastuey , educational psychologist and spokesperson for DSAS, and Begoña Elizalde , a psychologist expert in grief and loss, warned about the dangers of romanticizing and trivializing suicide and the contagious effect that some of these works have caused, especially among younger people. But they also referred to other creations that deal with suicide in a respectful and realistic way and that may even play a role in its prevention.
During the session, some works were analyzed, highlighting how suicide has been treated in each case and how it can impact society, either positively or negatively. Creations ranging from classics such as Death of a Traveler , The Magic Flute , Romeo and Juliet and How Beautiful It Is to Live , to more contemporary works such as Captain Fantastic , Thelma & Louis , Litus or Exceptional Things .
