Interpersonal relationships and BPD

One of the main difficulties for people with borderline personality disorder (BPD) is relationships with others. They often develop insecure and unstable relationships that can lead to very intense situations. Managing their emotional changes and how these affect interpersonal relationships is a significant challenge for people with BPD and their closest circle. In this session, we want to answer any questions you may have about this topic.

The ability to connect with others is essential for human beings. Furthermore, a key characteristic of borderline personality disorder is the intense emotional experience, with emotions felt in extreme ways (especially when related to relationships). These two factors are inextricably linked; one inevitably influences the other, in one way or another. Depending on how well the individual manages this intense experience, they may express it through disruptive or risky behaviors.

It's important that you try to identify the circumstances under which the emotion overwhelms you. This is a good first step toward gaining control. In any case, the fact that you can ask yourself this question indicates that you are experiencing distress and, at the same time, that you are trying to understand what is happening—two essential conditions for deciding to seek a therapist to address these difficulties.

It's difficult, if not impossible, to control what we feel. We don't choose which emotions to feel, but with help, we can have greater control over them. Anger is a basic and adaptive emotion; it gives us information about the things that cause us distress. If this anger is generalized, it makes a person feel lost. This is a good time to consult a professional.

There has most likely been progress with the therapy you've been doing, although it's always difficult to perceive it yourself while you're immersed in the process. It would be good if you could discuss this with your therapist. Interpersonal relationships are complex for everyone. If we add difficulties regulating emotions, impulsivity, and low frustration tolerance, they can quickly become even more complicated, leading to conflicts and feelings of misunderstanding. This can create even greater difficulties in regulating emotions. Working on this is a process that takes time. Don't give up on your therapeutic journey.

When faced with such severe crises, guilt can lead to getting lost in the attempt to repair what has happened. This is neither always possible nor the most important thing. These moments can be seen as a golden opportunity to analyze and work through them in as much detail as possible, thus developing a different approach that makes it easier to overlook things.

The support you can receive from your environment is important, but the central aspect remains the work you can do from and about your own difficulties.

We find it very difficult to recommend anything in this regard. We believe that no book can replace the experience of treatment. Self-knowledge, in our view, comes through the therapeutic relationship. It's not so much about searching for or finding a BPD therapy program, but rather about finding a clinical professional with whom you feel you can begin working.

Are relationships without difficulties possible? Differences are inevitable since we are human, and this means that conflict in romantic relationships, and others (such as friendships, work relationships, family…), is guaranteed.

There's often a belief and illusion that a partner can compensate for one's shortcomings and fill one's voids, and this ends up affecting the relationship. If one can let go of that idea, the relationship becomes much more viable.

It's often difficult to accept that others think differently, and this is frequently the root of conflict. Fortunately, it's possible to learn to live better with these differences without them becoming so painful and problematic.

Generally, in treatment, in a direct or indirect way and through the therapeutic relationship, one ends up working on frustration tolerance, separation anxieties, emotional regulation, impulsivity management and one's own difficulties, surely the most important ones.

Sometimes, dealing with impulsivity is very difficult and requires time and therapeutic work. We hope that if your daughter has been working with these professionals for some time, she has found a safe and supportive environment where she can continue to address these challenges.

Families who witness so much sustained suffering can easily feel overwhelmed and helpless. The risk of anticipating events or the need to do something becomes urgent and unstoppable. Not anticipating events and not letting one's own anguish take over can provide support that benefits everyone. This is very difficult to do alone, so finding a space that helps guide and support everyone through this process is often helpful.

We can read it as moments of crisis and difficulty in dealing with what is troubling him and causing him suffering.

Maintaining our composure and not misinterpreting that expression as personal can help create distance and prevent escalation. Asking what's bothering them can de-escalate the situation.

In times of crisis, people find it harder to be moved by what others say. The presence of others might even be uncomfortable at that moment, but it may be easier to tolerate later. Being attuned to these emotional states is important for choosing the right moment to speak. The temptation to offer advice and tell people what should be done can have the opposite effect.

We must not forget that relationships do not depend on only one party, but that there are differences that must be lived with.

The fear of loneliness and the difficulties of separation are complex dimensions for everyone to deal with; and when someone is moving in more confused and fragile lines, they can certainly find themselves in very delicate situations.

Clinging to a relationship in an attempt to find some calm and stability leads them to be unable to do without each other and, contrary to what they were looking for, to find themselves in a more complex and stormy situation.

The desire to warn the person with BPD of this risk is understandable, but we know that it depends more on what the person can work on in the context of the therapeutic relationship itself than on advice and warnings from the close environment.

The illusion and need for fulfillment, along with a false sense of autonomy and growth, can be understood as an attempt at stability and to be someone for another person. The horror they experience at the prospect of loneliness is so intense and catastrophic that they often prefer a bad relationship that, for better or worse, accompanies them, filling the void they feel in their lives. Listening to and addressing their suffering, and trusting them, seems to be the best way to awaken their desire to change this pattern and seek professional help.

Each area typically has family support groups; these often vary depending on the region. We recommend actively searching for public resources in your area. You can find the one closest to your home in the directory of the Spanish Confederation of Mental Health .

Our experience is that each person expresses their distress differently, regardless of gender. However, the literature suggests that men with BPD may end up having more problems with the law because their distress may be expressed more behaviorally. Being able to consider the uniqueness of each person is essential to providing services tailored to their individual needs.

Difficulties in interpersonal relationships can lead some people to withdraw due to negative experiences and the anxieties involved in the relationship. This can trigger symptoms of social anxiety.

You're probably familiar with several therapeutic approaches for addressing the challenges of BPD. Each offers a different perspective that can be helpful when working with individuals with BPD. Exploring the approaches of psychoanalysis, mentalization-based therapy, transference-based therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and others are all options worth considering.

As you know, it's difficult to give generic answers that work for everyone.
