Autism and the transition to adulthood

The transition from childhood to adulthood for individuals with autism is a stage of change that involves facing new challenges and awakens many fears and doubts within the family. We want them to become increasingly independent, but fear overwhelms us: Will they be able to go to school alone? Will they know how to manage moments of dysregulation? Will they know how to interact with friends? How will they handle their first romantic and sexual experiences? In this Ask the Expert section, we will give you some guidelines to support your sons and daughters through this challenging stage, fostering their autonomy as much as possible, and overcoming some of the most common fears families experience.
